Energy Web and Protocol Labs finally made the announcement, showing the adoption of open source solutions by cryptocurrency miners with the aim of harnessing decentralized renewable energy sources according to Filecoin Predictions reports.
Six Filecoin storage providers purchased authenticated renewable energy using Energy Web Zero from 3Degrees as part of the solution’s showcase. The purchase of renewable energy has been archived in the reputation system called Filerep which stores the data on Filecoin’s decentralized network. Integrating renewable energy data into Filerep allows customers to consider renewable energy sources in the decision-making process when selecting storage providers. Each registration on Filerep leads the user to their unique verification page on the Energy Web Zero platform. The verification page indicates the point of energy production, the documentation of the renewable energy source and the certificate of ownership attestation corresponding to the renewable energy credits available.
This solution to reduce Filecoin’s carbon footprint will be available on multiple blockchains so that it becomes easy for cryptocurrency miners to conduct green mining and provide its proof. Both platforms are now eager to develop a set of decentralized and open source solutions to ensure that every storage provider at Filecoin can purchase renewable energy sources from Energy Web Zero. Filecoin customers and storage providers will authenticate the supply to substantiate environmental claims with their transactions anchored to the Energy Web chain.
Both platforms are working on the development of the open source solution to comply with the Crypto Climate Accord (CCA) initiative. CCA’s central mission is to reduce the carbon footprint of the cryptocurrency industry by promoting green industry practices and implementing decentralized open source solutions. 3Degrees and Protocol Labs are both strong supporters of CCA, while Energy Web is one of the main organizers of CCA.
