Energy Web is developing a blockchain-based renewable electric vehicle charging app

Energy Web partners with Vodafone and Mastercard on apps for a new “Economy of Things” platform.

The platform, which will enable connected devices verified on Vodafone’s Digital Asset Broker (DAB) to transact seamlessly and securely, includes electric vehicles (EVs) transacting directly with charging points as well as interactions between other vehicles, machines and IoT devices.

The service has been commissioned as part of a trial with a connected electric vehicle communicating autonomously and securely with a charging point at Vodafone’s UK technology center in Newbury and is implementing a 100% energy charging solution % clean for electric vehicles.

The solution can be adapted to work with any charging infrastructure that accepts Mastercard payments and any electric vehicle in the world, including grid-connected street chargers. With it, users can verify and prove that the energy used to charge their EV comes from renewable sources.

“There is currently no way for electric vehicle drivers to ensure that all the electricity used to charge their vehicles comes from renewable sources,” comments Jesse Morris, CEO of Energy Web Foundation.

“As access to green energy solutions becomes more popular, this is absolutely necessary. Working with any on-street EV charger, our solution can give individuals and businesses the assurance of using clean energy – a real game-changer for EV users and companies with electric fleets.

The Green Charging app provides a transparent REC splitting process that allows anyone to acquire proof that energy purchased for charging is certified from renewable sources, says Energy Web.

Using a single app with an integrated mobile wallet, users can also choose the cheapest electricity based on location and charging time and pay for it automatically. When an electric vehicle is plugged in, the car and the charging station identify themselves using Vodafone’s network, while payments for energy are made using Mastercard’s payment gateways.

A green proof of recharge is sent to the user’s smartphone by Energy Web, including the exact origin and type of energy.

With real-time information on the status and compatibility of the nearest available charging point, and seamless transactions, Vodafone predicts its EV service should help eliminate drivers’ “range anxiety” of running out of battery capacity and allow them to choose renewable energy electricity providers.

The plan is to deploy the solution at the enterprise level in the coming months.

Applied on a large scale, Vodafone believes it should be ideal for fleet management, taxi and road transport operations, as it allows them to centralize all their charging requirements or even transmit unused electricity to a other employee or road user. They could also integrate the app into their emissions reports as reliable proof that the electric vehicles used in their operations are powered by renewable energy.

Owners of electric vehicles can take their domestic electricity tariffs with them and travel to charging networks abroad.
