Indian Railways get direct traction power from solar energy! Installation of a power plant in Bina

This solar power plant is a proof of concept (POC) for Indian Railways to realize the future dream of green Indian Railways by 2030.

Eco-friendly stage by Indian Railways! As the Ministry of Railways has decided to install solar power plants on its vacant and unused land, the West Central Railway area has set up a solar power plant in Bina. The solar plant was installed at Bina in association with BHEL in June 2020. According to the national carrier, it is the first solar plant in the Indian Railways network to directly supply Traction Power (OHE). It directly supplies the OHE 25kV lines with traction energy. The Bina solar power plant covers an area of more than 10 acres. The solar power plant has 5800 solar modules, mounted on 145 sets of modular mounting structure on 1015 pile foundation.

According to Indian Railways, solar power plants have various advantages. This solar plant will generate electricity which will be supplied free of charge to the Indian Railways. The solar plant is expected to generate 1.8 MU of electricity per year. It is also said that the solar power plant will be able to save 2,160 tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year. This solar power plant is a proof of concept (POC) for Indian Railways to realize the future dream of green Indian Railways by 2030.

In the 2017-18 Union budget, the Modi government announced that it would supply nearly 7,000 railway stations across the country with solar energy in the medium term. In the budget, the government said that as part of its 1,000 megawatt solar mission, work would be undertaken for 2,000 stations. Earlier, the Ministry of Railways said that the use of solar energy would accelerate the mission of Indian Railways to achieve the goal of becoming a net zero carbon emission railway network. The national carrier, to achieve this, had drawn up a mega plan to set up solar power plants with a capacity of 20 GW using its vacant land by 2030.
