LOCAL households can cut their energy bills skyrocketing with the launch of “Home Energy Saving Kits” at Laois Libraries.

The kits developed by energy agency Codema in Dublin contain five tools and six exercises to help people save energy at home. Kits can be borrowed free of charge from county libraries.

The items in the toolkits address three key areas of energy use in the home – space heating, hot water and electricity use – and can help identify common problems such as lack of insulation, poor ventilation and appliances in the house that could increase electricity bills.

The kit comes with a step-by-step user manual and demonstration video that easily explains how to use each tool correctly, so homeowners with the most basic knowledge of energy saving can use it.

Speaking at the launch on Wednesday October 12, Laois Co Council cathaoirleach cllr Thomasina Connell said the kits are easy to use and will help many homeowners take that first step on their “sustainable energy journey”. The kits should also help people reduce their energy consumption during the current period of high energy costs.

Bernie Foran, County Laois Librarian, explained, “This project promotes energy awareness and builds on the core principles of community resource sharing library to engage, educate and enrich citizens. We are delighted to support energy awareness through the public roll-out of the kits across the Laois library network.

Suzanne Dempsey, the county council’s environmental awareness manager, described county libraries as the perfect home for the kits, as many library staff have received training on how to use the kits and can advise people on their use.
