The NIST National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) is pleased to announce the release of NIST SP 1800-32, Securing Distributed Energy Resources: An Example of Industrial Internet of Things Cybersecurity Solution.
The use of small-scale distributed energy resources (DER) is growing rapidly and transforming the power grid. In this new modern power grid, a distribution utility may need to communicate remotely with thousands of DERs and other grid-edge devices, many of which do not belong to them. Any attack that can deny, disrupt, or alter DER communications could prevent a utility from performing necessary control actions and could decrease network resiliency.
The NCCoE how-to guide presents an example solution that can help organizations:
- protect and preserve the integrity of the communication traffic of devices and networks at the network edge,
- capture an immutable record of control actions across DERs,
- support secure data flows from edge to cloud, data visualization and sharing,
- remotely monitor utility and non-utility DERs.
